Mission

The mission of Suffolk Lawyers for Justice is to ensure that poor people, both children and adults, accused of crimes in Suffolk County, receive competent and zealous representation.

Suffolk Lawyers for Justice provides continuous training and supervision for all the attorneys on our defense panel.  We mentor our attorneys and provide them with constantly updated case law, court information, and networking resources to assure that their clients receive the highest level of representation.

Program Overview

Suffolk Lawyers for Justice was formed in 2000 to  administer the delivery of criminal defense services to indigent people in Suffolk County. We are a non-profit organization operating under contract with the Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS).

SLJ’s board of directors oversees over 300 private attorneys who are appointed to defend clients in thirteen Boston area courts. Our attorneys handle about ninety percent of indigent criminal cases in the District, Superior, and Juvenile courts of Suffolk county.  SLJ works with courts, state agencies, and educational institutions with the aim of providing zealous criminal defense to the poor.

SLJ staff schedules members of the private bar to be present in the courts on specific dates for appointment to represent indigent criminal defendants. We supervise and support our attorneys through ongoing performance evaluations and continuing legal education programs.
