Membership Requirements

To be a member of Suffolk Lawyers for Justice, Inc., you must:

i. Be a member in good standing of the Massachusetts bar;

ii. Have an office within ready accessibility to subway lines near the courts in which you are a panel attorney;

iii. Have completed the CPCS Zealous Advocacy in the District and Juvenile Courts course sponsored by the Committee for Public Counsel Services and conducted by the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc., (or have received a waiver of the training from CPCS) and;

iv. Have ability in criminal law and procedure and in litigation.

At the start of each fiscal year, panel attorneys must sign a contract agreeing to abide by all the requirements for membership in the program, including providing SLJ with proof of malpractice insurance coverage.

 

Panel attorneys must comply with the Performance Guidelines Governing Representation of Indigents in Criminal Cases promulgated by the Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS). SLJ panel attorneys are required to read and be familiar with the CPCS Assigned Counsel Manual of Policies and Procedures (September 1999 edition).

All SLJ panel members are required to participate in Attorney Performance Evaluations conducted by SLJ Staff Attorneys. Evaluations focus on attorney file maintenance, motions and investigation practice, client and court relations and trial skills. Evaluations are designed to be a constructive and valuable means of assessing attorney performance.
